I don’t think I really need to add details as this is the simplest way to ask the question but for those who need it in different wording:
CFLs are the (popular) spiral white light bulbs that are ‘green friendly’ and energy efficient etc. and they would go in the actual garage door opener, NOT the remote.

We use CFL’s in our garage door opener. We also use CFL’s in our motion-sensor outdoor lights.
I know there are concerns about the mercury content of CFL’s (about 5 mg per bulb) and proper disposal of them. Manufacture of incandescent (”regular”) bulbs produces mercury which ends up in the environment, but presumably the manufacturers know how to dispose of mercury properly, while most laypersons simply throw their CFL’s away. This document may be helpful if you’re wondering what to do with your used CFL’s.
The next generation of bulbs will be LEDs, which don’t have mercury at all!
