How do I program the garage door remote to an old sears unit?

The unit should be held up by carriage/lag bolts, not the casing bolts, so you should be able to remove the cover, no problems. In fact, I’d do it anyway just to make sure everything is tightened up and lubed, depending on whether the mounting bolts are external (usually the top front, about the drive screw/chain) or internal (bolted through to a joist). Under the external case will be the DIP switch for setting the code.
The remote could be shot, too. Did you replace the batteries? Does it have an LED that blinks when you push the button? Are the battery connections corroded?
If you can get a model number off of the motor housing, you could probably google up the owner’s manual.

An instruction manuel.
The dip switches on your remote are in the switches each switch has three positions make.
The same position go online and your unit and see if sears will send you an instruction manuel.
