How do I find out laws on building a steel live-in workshop?

I recently saw ghost rider. In the movie he lives in his workshop. I build bikes and would love to buy one of those steel garage kits to live in. I dont need a traditional home. More of an artists studio is what I want. Can someone just buy land and build something like this to live in?

      You can in southern ILL.. Lots of people build pole barns and make a place to live inside.
