jayzun asked:

Our torsion spring on our garage door broke last night. I called Precision Door Services today and they came out and suggested I replace the other hardware as well. I think they are right in this as the hardware is really old and i could see where the bearings were worn. So anyway, I want to know if I got taken. The whole kit cost $599 and it replaced both torsion springs which are rated for 30,000 cycles and the door is about 400 pounds. They also replaced the following:

BK-EBF - Bearing kit with end bearing flange 2 end bearings and center bearing
Set of 12′ Torsion Cable Drums
Pair of 7′ Torsion Cables
10 Precision Rollers

It doesn’t seem like a whole lot of stuff since they quoted $250 for the springs alone and $350 for the rest of this stuff. I can see the cost of the springs being that much, but the rest seems questionable. I postdated the check because I was a little suspicious.
Oh sorry…my vehicle was locked in the garage and it’s after hours so I had to get it fixed tonight. This is why I didnt do my customary research properly before I had the work done.

The work and hardware is all lifetime guaranteed…but it’s just when I search for the individual parts online (not the exact ones but seemingly similar)…they all seem like they’re less than $20 each besides the springs.

Sounds like you got a good deal to me…especially since you can be maimed or killed playing around with those springs.

We had the torsion springs replaced several years ago and it was $300. They may have put in a few more things as well, I’m not sure. It does seem high for everything else that you got above and beyond the springs ~ but you probably would have had to do it in the future anyway or get completely NEW DOORS $$$$. Make sure you get a guarantee on the work and parts they put in cause if they don’t hold up ~ it wasn’t worth it. Hopefully you got something in writing guaranteeing their work.
I guess it is about right for the whole job.
You should have gotten 2-3 bids ~ before going ahead with any one of them. And asked if there could be any additional charges over and above the torsion springs to do a good comparison.
