I have a 4 year old VW Golf. Do local garages provide reliable service and MOT or should I stick to VW dealer?

VW dealers are charging £100/hr and I am told I can get things fixed and service a lot cheaper with local garages, particularly when my warranty has expired. There’s no point buying extended warranty right?!
