How can you paint a garage floor?

Friday, November 14th, 2008
Fedora girl asked:

Our 2 car garage has paint and gunk splattered all over it. We just bought the house.
How can I make the garage floor look nice and clean?
What can I clean it with?
Do I need to prime it?
What paint is best, or is it a stain?

How To Choose Custom Garage Doors

Thursday, November 13th, 2008
Bob Kirkright asked:

When you decide to install custom garage doors, there really is little limit to how much they can be adjusted to fit your needs. Don’t be shy of making unusual requests: if the organization installing your doors is in any way competent, they should be able to accommodate needs far removed from the normal.

#Opening mechanisms

Almost any way of opening a garage door can be automated - you don’t need to stick to the classic ‘up and over’ mechanism used in older automatic garage doors. Let’s look through some of the choices that are open to you.

The standard ‘up and over’ mechanism is a good basis for a custom garage door. Because it is so widespread, it is possible to find doors with this mechanism in almost any style imaginable (and, let’s face it, also in many styles that make you wonder if the designer was crazed or colour-blind).

Roller doors are a good choice if you do not have much space in front of your garage door. This might be the case in inner-city areas, for example, or in other areas where your garage is squeezed into an awkward position. In automatic garage doors with a roller mechanism, the door will simply roll itself up into a small space, allowing you to pass underneath it. It will not need any space in front of the garage. One aspect to note with these doors is that, despite the temptation, they should generally not be left in a half-open position. The mechanisms are not designed to hold in a position other than ‘open’ or ‘closed’, and they may end up being strained and wearing out quickly if you try to make them do this. If you do have a need to leave the garage door half-open, you should enquire about custom garage doors with a mechanism designed to accommodate this need.

Sectional custom garage doors, opening vertically, can be a very impressive effect. They open inwards: this needs a larger garage with some spare space inside, but it is highly satisfying to drive home in the evening and see your garage door swinging inwards.

Another advantage of sectional garage doors is that they are great for people who spend some time in their garage. If your garage doubles as a home gym or a workshop, you probably want a custom garage door that can let some light in. Sectional doors are great for this, because you can open them partially and get a lot of light into the garage. Compare that to up-and-over or rolling automatic garage doors, which open from the bottom up and so will not let much sunlight in unless you open them fully.

#Options for garage doors

The garage door doesn’t need to be a plain facade - you can adapt it to your own wishes. If you would like to let light in, how about adding a window to your custom garage door setup? Windows can be included in sectional custom garage doors very easily. Remember that windows in your custom garage door are a feature reasonably easy to add initially, but very hard to incorporate later. If you would like to let sunlight into your garage, the time to do it is when you first buy your custom garage door. It is much easier to cover up an unwanted window in custom garage doors than it is to add one which was never installed.

And what about the colours? There is no reason why you should stick with standard white automatic garage door, unless you have consciously decided that you like that style. Much better to investigate different colours - or you could be even more adventurous. Some homeowners have chosen to have pictures painted onto their garage doors, often to magnificent effect. Custom garage doors with custom designs are one of the few demonstrations that spray paint has more use than writing teenagers’ names under bridges!

Purchase a Quality Garage Doors Opener For Your Home

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008
Jim Kesel asked:

Today having a large insulated garage is an important part of any new home construction. In addition many people are replacing their existing garage doors with more energy efficient doors to save money. Most homes now have the convenience of a garage doors opener that operates from both the vehicle and from a keypad or key lock. Selecting the right door garages doors opener is a lot easier now with the use of the Internet.

In terms of structural integrity your garage doors are the weakest part of your home or business. Spending the money on a top of the line garage door is a very good investment in your structure. This is especially true if you happen to live in high wind risk areas. A good high wind door will protect your structure from winds up to 140 miles per hour. Coupled with good insulated panels a good quality garage door can make a tremendous difference. If you lose your garage door during a storm even a severe thunderstorm you have a very good chance of losing the roof of your home or business.

A good garage doors opener is also critical to protecting your structures contents. Having a good garage doors opener that will lock down properly will assure that your door does not get lifted by a gust of wind. In addition it can also protect the contents of your garage and home from burglary and home invasion. The best garage doors on the market are designed to integrate with your home and business security system. This allows you to monitor your entire structure from one location in the structure and when you are away. In many cases you will be able to determine whether your garage doors are down and locked or open. When your garage doors opener operates you can also receive an email or an alert on your cell phone as well.

Quality garage door openers use several different types of drives to operate. The most common are chain, shaft and belt systems. Chain driven systems have been around the longest and are noisy but lower cost, usually between $140 and $200. Shaft drive systems are the standard. They are very reliable and do a good job of locking the door down. The average cost runs between $160 and $240. Top of the line garage door systems use a belt drive system that is very quiet but pricey $180 to $400. Remember you want a system that allows you to integrate it with your security systems so you may end up pay as much as 50 percent more. You can easily install a garage doors opener yourself; however it is best to let a professional install the system if it is being integrated into your security system.

Additional features that are necessary and required by law are automatic reverse system that is initiated upon contact and also by the sensors. A standby battery operation system that allows the garage doors opener to operate when the power is off. This feature is not only convenient but vital during strong storms when hand operation is not feasible. All garage doors openers have an emergency release that allows you to open the door manually in case of an emergency. When the vehicle is in the garage it can be very hard to access this release without damaging the vehicles finish.

Spending the time to adequately research all the different garage door opener manufactures will help you decide what garage doors opener you need for your structure. A visit to the local home improvement store will also help you find additional valuable information. In terms of a garage doors opener you should spend the most amount of money you can afford to assure the security of your home and family.

Three Simple Steps I Used to Get My Garage Organized

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008
Dr. Isabella Santorini asked:

Life works incredibly well when our houses are clean and organized. When we’re organized, we can think more clearly, we’re more efficient, and we can take on projects that have lain dormant for months or even years. I even have a lot more energy when I

I love having a clean garage. It makes the rest of the house run smoothly and provides an excellent place for storing things that I can’t get rid of immediately. Also, as I continually clean out the house, I can immediately clear it away without having to excavate the garage in hopes of finding a suitable place to put things before I get around to disposing of them.

But garage organization is tricky. The garage holds a lot of varied things in it, which can make it a challenge for organization. And remember, lasting organization doesn’t happen overnight. It is crucial to start smart because decluttering takes a lot of effort at the beginning. I strongly recommend getting expert advice in order to see results quickly and avoid getting bogged down in too much “stuff”. You’ll save yourself hours and hours of work if you listen to the right people.

When I decided to get my garage organized, I followed these simple steps to get started:

Step 1. Get Rid of Everything You Can – This is not always the first step in organizing a room. But for the garage, it is essential. This is because garages are catch-alls. They fill up with random things that we have no plan for. When doing this step, it’s time to be very disciplined. If you know you’re going to have a problem with this, ask a friend for support. Other people will look at our mess with no emotional attachment and they can help us see how ridiculous it is to save some of the things that we’re holding on to. A good tip for this step is recycling household waste which, in my town, includes paint, batteries, electronic equipment (cords etc.), and old cleaners that I no longer use. Call your trash company to find out if anyone in your town provides this service.

Step 2. Get Rid of More – This seems silly, but it really works. Do a massive cleanout of your garage. Then don’t do anything else to the garage for several days. After that, go back into the garage and you’ll automatically see more things that you can get rid of. The key to decluttering garages is to get yourself into the mindset of having a useful, functional garage. Once you have this idea in mind, it will be easier and easier to clear it out. Repeat Step 2 as many times as you need until you have less and less in your garage.

Step 3. Train Yourself to Think “Appropriate” – When I set out to get my garage organized, I had to train myself to ask: Is this an appropriate thing to be in the garage? If not, then it had to go. Dress-up clothes, Christmas decorations, and furniture all had to find new homes. I put some of this up in the attic, and other things I had to get rid of. Don’t use your garage and a dumping site—it won’t prove to be useful space.

When roofing a garage, does it matter which way the new boards go?

Sunday, November 9th, 2008
curious asked:

Our garage roof had a lot of water damage so we have to replace the old boards. Does it matter which side of the plywood goes up - smooth or rough side? Any re-roofing tips would be appreciated, it’s the first time doing it ourself.

What is the most cost efficient way to heat my garage?

Saturday, November 8th, 2008
miller_time asked:

Our old home has a basement for our dog kennels. We have just bought a new townhouse to move closer to our jobs and we must now move the kennels into the 2 car garage. The garage ceiling is insulated and sits below our kitchen. Both walls that we share with our neighbors in the townhouse are insulated. It was 18F today and the garage was just too cold for me to feel comfortable leaving the animals for a few hours a day.

I want to add a heater for their comfort but don’t want to pay insane electric bills or kill em with fumes.

What is the best way to keep these guys comfortable through the winter without breaking the bank?

Jane

Use Delden Garage Doors to Protect Your Home and Its Contents

Thursday, November 6th, 2008
Jim Kesel asked:

Delden Garage Doors is a regional garage door manufacturer and installer that located in middle of the USA with offices in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Delden Garage Doors also owns the Amarr garage door company. Delden has been manufacturing garage doors since the mid 1960’s. They manufacture and install a complete line of residential and commercial garage doors. Garage door pricing shows that Delden Garage doors are considered a mid priced garage door.

The Vintage Plus line of Delden Garage Doors is a very popular and affordable carriage door. The 25 gauge steel pre-painted doors are 2 inches thick insulated with polystyrene with a vinyl backing. They are reported to have an R-value of at least 6. Obviously these doors are not meant to be used in areas that have tough winters or where you are going to heat or cool your garage. One of the problems with using polystyrene insulated panels is that this type insulation leaves gaps which reduce the effectiveness of the insulation.

The Delden DTR 1748 is probably the company’s best garage doors. The dual steel panels have a galvanized 25 gauge external panel and a 27 gauge interior panel that sandwiches 2 inches of polyurethane insulation. This gives the door a very energy efficient R-value of 15 plus. Installing Delden Garage Doors of this quality will mean that you will save significant energy if you planning to heat or cool your garage. You will certainly find that your workshop will be comfortable no matter what the weather is outside. These garages will cost you more money but in our opinion they are worth it.

Saving money by purchasing cheap garage doors really is penny wise and pound foolish as the garage door opening is certainly the weakest point in your homes structure. Thieves routinely target garage doors in their efforts to get into your home. A solid garage door that is tied to your home security system will go a long way to protecting your family and your homes contents. In some cases the security system will email you whenever someone opens or enters your garage. If you have a workshop located in your garage or have a classic care collection then you can be assured that your toys are well protected.

Purchasing good quality Delden Garage Doors will save you money and keep you garage and your home secure. However if you live in a high wind risk area Delden does not offer any door that will meet the stringent standards needed to protect your home from a severe thunderstorm, tornado or hurricane. Never the less if you live in the Midwest where the high wind risk is minimal than Delden Garage Doors will certainly meet all your weather protection needs.

Customer service is considered to be good with Delden doors. The fact that the company is regionally Midwest based means that your ability to locate garage doors parts or service is relatively easy. Delden may build some of the best garage doors available. We do recommend Delden Garage Doors for your home or business.
