Can you keep a freezer in the garage during the winter or will it stop working?

My freezer stopped working in my garage (I live in Chicago, cold!!) and my coworker told me you cant keep freezers in the garage or they will stop working when it gets too cold. Is this true? I dont want to buy a new one if it’s going to do the same thing and thats why this one stopped working. I’ve never heard of this before.

      I have always had mine outside in the garage, which isn’t heated. Did all of your food thaw out, or is it not running as much? If it is really cold outside, it won’t need to come on as often because the outside temp. does affect it.
